ASHLAND, WI-- A grant from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction is helping students eat healthily and try new foods.
The Ashland School district received $39,000 dollars this year for several of their schools to take part in the program.
1st grader Isabella shows us her plate at lunchtime saying, "I got peaches, apples, peaches, a drink, asparagus."
Amanda Tutor the Food Services Director for the Ashland School District says this program provides food on top of what students get during breakfast and lunch.
"Where the students get free fresh fruit and vegetable a few days a week. And then also we provide educational facts to go along with them so they can learn interesting facts about the fruits and vegetables that were serving," she says.
The district was provided enough funding to feed every child in the K through 5 schools.
Something that hasn't happened before.
Tutor says, "Each year is a reapplication. So sometimes some schools don't and some schools do."
Schools with low-income families typically receive funding.
Tutor says it can greatly help out families in need.
She says, "It's a great way to give the kids one more opportunity to have something to eat. So if they're not getting all their nutrition at home, you know they're getting one more point of access here at school."
But it doesn't mean these kids aren't still picky eaters
Isabella says, "I don't like peppers or kiwi or anybody, anything. No vegetables except apples and peaches."
Teachers at the school say with students having full bellies they are able to concentrate more in the classroom.
Bayfield School District is another school that received funding from the program.
They got more than $8,000 dollars.
