Where Nashville Food Writers Loved to Eat in 2019 - Eater Nashville

Welcome to Year in Eater 2019 — the continuation of an Eater tradition where Eater Nashville surveys local restaurant journalists and bloggers, asking them to weigh in on the year in Nashville dining. Their answers to the annual “Year in Eater” survey will be revealed in several posts this week. Responses are cut, pasted, and (mostly) unedited, and are listed in no particular order. Be sure to check back throughout the week for more Year in Eater coverage.

Shown below are the places local dining authorities returned to time and again for off-duty dining purposes. Let us know the restaurants you frequented this year in the comments below, on Facebook, or on Twitter.

What were your top Nashville restaurant standbys of 2019?

Alex Hendrickson freelance food and lifestyle writer at Eater Nashville StyleBlueprint, and others : Henrietta Red, for oysters and potato chips; Barcelona, for paella; Chauhan Ale & Masala House; Lyra and Italia, for Sunday night pizza.

Chris Chamberlain, food writer at Nashville Scene, Sounds Like Nashville, and other publications: I’m still most likely to be spotted at Martin’s or Peg Leg Porker (or the YMCA burning it off,) but I’ve also added Redheaded Stranger and Chaatable to my list of dependables that serve fantastic and interesting food consistently.

Nancy Vienneau, restaurant critic, The Tennessean; food journalist, Nashville Lifestyles Magazine: Cafe Roze, Nicky’s Coal Fired, and Martin’s Bar-B-Q.

Jackie Gutierrez-Jones, editor, copywriter, lifestyle journalist for Eater, Nashville Lifestyle, Time Out, Lonely Planet: Whether it’s guzzling pre-party drinks on a hipper-than-thou rooftop or impressing out-of-towners with a thoughtful and memorable Southern-style meal, I found myself revisiting the Bobby more times than I’d care to admit.

Delia Jo Ramsey, Eater Nashville editor and food writer: Most often, find me dining solo at Setsun or Peninsula, or bringing lunch guests to Arnold’s for a proper introduction to the city via a sprawling table covered with what always morphs from a meat-and-3 to 3-meats-and-7. Also, I’m pretty sure I survived 2019 thanks to a regular rotation of queso (shout out to newcomers Redheaded Stranger and Superica, classic Satco, and coming-soon Ladybird) and smoothies and juice shots from juice bars around town.

Kristin Luna, freelance travel/food writer and founder of travel blog Camels & Chocolate: Other than repeat visits to Tailor and Chaatable, both of which opened at the tail end of 2018, I found myself reverting back to beloved favorites–like City House, Rolf & Daughters, the Farm House and Butcher & Bee—throughout the year, rather than get attached to a newcomer that inevitably has a one-year shelf life, if that. Plus, there are an overwhelming number of new restaurants opening these days, and it stresses me out to pick a new one that may or may not impress—I’d rather spend my dollars and coveted nights out on a tried-and-true favorite that hasn’t disappointed me over the years.

Ashley Brantley, food/travel writer for Eater Nashville, Nashville Scene, Frommer’s, and others: Nicky’s Coal Fired, Green Pheasant, Bare Bones Butcher, Cafe Roze, 51st Deli, Red Perch.
