Laura Gallup is the marketing and events coordinator for the Ithaca Farmers Market as well as the managing editor of Edible Finger Lakes magazine. She lives in Ithaca but grew up eating strawberries by the bucketful on her dad’s farm in Hector. In this new column, Laura will be sharing tips on how you can eat locally year-round.
If you’re anything like me, you’ve waited to do all your holiday shopping until this weekend - and you’re just now digging out the wrapping paper and bows. But instead of running around to 20 different stores this year, I’m doing all my shopping at the Ithaca Farmers Market.

Here’s a list of my top 10 picks - each item made by hand by a person in our community, each an expert in their craft. Shop the market for two more Saturdays: December 14th and 21st. These thoughtful, unique items are sure to please the mom, dad, cousin, sister, brother, friend, coworker and partner on any list!
#1 — Wooden cutting board. Made by Bill Baker of Plum Creek Designs.Bill is the head of the “Buildings & Grounds” committee at the market. This means he’s the go-to guy whenever something breaks or goes awry!

Olivia crochets each hat by hand and you can often see her working on a project at market, in Ithaca coffee shops and out in the wild - she’s even been known to take her work with her on a hike. #3 — “First Fling” cider. Made by the Merwins & co. at Black Diamond Cider.
Their orchard is home to more than 100 varieties of apples and pears #4 — Holiday wreath. Made by the team at Plenty of Posies.
In the summertime, P.O.P. supplies many of the Ithaca Farmers Market weddings with gorgeous bouquets and centerpieces. #5 — Coffee mug. Made by Renata Wadsworth of Earth ’N’ Fire Pottery.
This company is a team, made up of veteran market member David Kingsbury, and Renata; new this year. #6 — Bread. Made by Veronika & Frank Fodor of Veronika’s Pastries.
Frank is the first vendor to arrive at market each Saturday and Sunday throughout the year. #7 — Screen printed silk scarf. Made by Esther Yaloz of Planetarium Design.
Esther was born in Israel but now lives in Elmira, NY. #8 — Cheese. Made by the VanOrdens at Crosswinds Farm & Creamery.
The Goblin cheese is named after a special cow. #9 — CBD oil. Made by the crew at Head & Heal.
Head & Heal’s product line is newly USDA Certified Organic. #10 — Art. Made by Alice Muhlback at spirit and kitsch.
