Portland’s Most Anticipated Restaurant Openings, Winter 2018-2019 - Eater Portland

Defined by a high-profile returns and a massive wave of wine bars, 2018 was a big year for Portland restaurants; still, some of the most anticipated restaurant openings of 2018 may not be 2018 openings at all. Fried chicken counter Yonder, Filipino spot Magna, and ethereal world cafe Malka are still set to open, but it seems unlikely any of them will begin seating guests by New Year’s Eve. That being said, good things are coming soon: Bullard, Doug Adams’ restaurant opening December 15, will start serving barbecue before winter officially begins, and restaurants like Bernstein’s Bagels’ new location, Top Chef alum BJ Smith’s new Polish-ish restaurant, and Pearl bar Pink Rabbit should open before the 21st, as well.

As Portland descends into its long, rainy winter, a few bright moments filled with dumplings, tacos, and Thai barbecue will keep the city going. Below, find Portland’s most anticipated winter openings, with the latest details and opening dates.

West

Portland institution Wildwood will soon have a new restaurant within its former digs, but West will be more than the restaurant in the old Wildwood space. Owners Summer and Patrick Triato brought in an A-team of talent, including husband-wife chef duo Lucian Prellwitz (Beast) and Morgan Deeks (Ned Ludd), as well as beverage director Brandon Josie (Palomar).
Anticipated opening: December

5 and Dime

Colin Carroll made a name for himself making charred-wood-infused cocktails and clarified milk punches at Trifecta Tavern, but his new bar will be a toned-down, neighborhood hangout with killer drinks. Guests can expect some conceptual cocktails, as well as a sprawling list of 25 or so classics for $10 and under. Food will be vegetable-heavy small plates and grilled sandwiches, or a slice from Atlas Pizza, which will share the kitchen.
Anticipated opening: December 22 at the earliest

Eem

A collaboration of three Portland powerhouses, Eem will feature Thai food from Earl Ninsom (Langbaan, Hat Yai), barbecue from Matt Vicedomini (Matt’s BBQ), and tropical drinks from Eric Nelson (Shipwreck, Laurelhurst Market). Expect to see rice bowls, Thai-spiced smoked meats, and colorfully blended cocktails.
Anticipated opening: December 31

Tope

The bar on the roof of the newly opened Hoxton hotel will open later than expected, specializing in chef Johnny Leach’s take on Mexican street food, served in a conservatory-style space with wicker furniture, a chic indoor fireplace, and plenty of trendy indoor plants. La Neta, Leach’s restaurant on the ground floor of the hotel, has already raked in the thumbs-up, so Tope will likely stun once it’s open.
Anticipated opening: January 1

Wonderly

The team behind Aalto Lounge and Bang Bang is looking to open its third spot as a casual cocktail bar for the Beaumont neighborhood in early 2018. Look for a menu of decently cheap cocktails, both classic and original, as well as a modest menu of comforting bar food.
Anticipated opening: First week of January

Scotch Lodge

La Moule co-owner Tommy Klus is opening his own whiskey-heavy cocktail bar from in the basement space vacated by Biwa in early 2018. Klus, who cultivated the collection at Multnomah Whiskey Library, will work alongside his longtime collaborator chef Aaron Barnett (St. Jack), who will bring his modern French sensibilities to the kitchen, with some twists.
Anticipated opening: Early January

Tasty n’ Daughters

John Gorham’s iconic, worldly brunch spot Tasty n’ Sons is moving from its longstanding location, changing its name, and settling in the old Woodsman Tavern spot. Expect to see a lot of what made Tasty so popular, as well as some possible additions like fresh pasta or steaks grilled in the Woodsman’s josper oven.
Anticipated opening: Mid-January

Erizo

Jacob Harth of the popular Spanish restaurant Bar Casa Vale is opening a second restaurant this winter, specializing in hyper-local and sustainable ingredients — steaks from retired dairy cows, line-caught seafood with a focus on invasive species, and foraged produce. It’ll also be a fine-dining vehicle for Harth, with 18-course dinners in a single, supper-club-style restaurant space.
Anticipated opening: This winter

Yonder

Yet again, Yonder is on our anticipated openings list, after permitting delays slowed the renovation process to a glacial pace. But, good news: Southern culinary rockstar Maya Lovelace’s fried chicken counter is revving forward with construction, which means — theoretically — Yonder should open sometime in early 2019. The restaurant will also serve as the permanent location for Lovelace’s pop-up, Mae.
Anticipated opening: Early 2019

Malka

The restaurant from the team behind Carte Blanche was supposed to open this fall, but the opening has been pushed back because of the usual unforeseen slowdowns. Crispy rice salads and more of chef Jessie Aron’s fairytale food should arrive in the Division-house-turned-restaurant sometime within the next two-to-five months, though the team is crossing fingers for February.
Anticipated opening: 2019

Din Tai Fung

The world-famous dumpling chain announced plans to open in the Washington Square mall this year, but we have no real updates from the restaurant regarding opening dates. For now, the mall’s website is still saying the restaurant should open “this holiday season,” serving its world-famous xiaolongbao and Taiwanese classics like beef noodle soup.
Anticipated opening: December-January

Magna

It’s hard to tell what’s going on with Clyde Common alum Carlo Lamagna’s highly anticipated Filipino restaurant. Lamagna hasn’t responded to multiple requests for updates, but the restaurant’s Instagram is chugging along with photos of restaurant t-shirts and more infuriatingly delicious-looking R&D dishes. For now, we’ll leave this in the generic “coming soon” category.
Anticipated opening: Who knows?
