It's always sad to see a restaurant go. But in an increasingly competitive market, Louisville saw more than 30 restaurants shut their doors in 2018.
Reasons for the closures run the gamut: from failed lease negotiations to family illness.
As we approach the new year, we're looking back on the restaurants that threw in the towels.
- Ann's by the River — 149 Spring St., Jeffersonville, Indiana. Closed in November after 28 years. Brothers Dave and John Coomer sold their family restaurant to retire.
- Asiatique — 1767 Bardstown Road. Closed in January after 24 years. Business partners Peng Looi and Pabs Sembillo split ways, with Looi choosing to spend more time at his other restaurant, August Moon.
- Bistro 1860 — 1765 Mellwood Ave. Closed in November after 7 years. Owners cited "irreconcilable differences" with their landlord.
- Bluegrass Burgers — 3334 Frankfort Ave. Closed in October after 7 years. Falls City Hospitality sold the restaurant building to Burger Boy Diner owner Dan Borsch.
- Boudreaux's Cajun Cooking — 11816-D Shelbyville Road. Closed in November after 2 months. Owner JJ Boudreaux underwent surgery and closed the small restaurant while recovering. Boudreaux's will still serve New Orleans sno-balls starting in April.
- Bristol Bar & Grille — 700 W. Riverside Drive, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Closed in April after 10 years. No reason provided.
- Buffalo Wild Wings — 1055 Bardstown Road. Closed in November after 15 years. Franchise owner Larry Podlogar said the location was due for a major renovation that the owners didn't want to undertake.
- The Cereal Box — 1220 Bardstown Road. Closed in October after under 2 years. No reason provided.
- Cliftons Pizza — 2230 Frankfort Ave. Closed in September after 28 years. Owner Mark Langley said it was time to "take a step back and take care of my personal life."
- Cocoberry Pops — 1813 Frankfort Ave. Closed after about 6 months. The locally owned frozen treat shop expanded too quickly and closed in favor of focusing on its original location.
- Cole's Place — 2928 W. Kentucky St. Closed in November after 12 years. The nightclub became a private events venue after a weekend shooting.
- Comfy Cow — 109 E. Market St., New Albany, Indiana. Closed in March after 4 years. Owners said they had outgrown their space.
- Comfy Cow — 1450 Veterans Parkway, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Closed in September after 3 years. The company said it was scaling back to focus on its core stores.
- District 22 Pizzeria — 110 E. Main St., New Albany, Indiana. Closed after under 1 year. Owner Matt McMahan sold his Southern Indiana restaurants to a new hospitality group.
- Dundee Candy Shop — 2112 Bardstown Road. Closed in April after 72 years. Owner Maria Moore retired and handed off her brand to the Sweet Spot Candy Shoppe.
- Feast BBQ — 116 W. Main St., New Albany, Indiana. Closed in March after 5 years. Owner Ryan Rogers said the restaurant had outgrown its space.
- Finn's Southern Kitchen — 1318 McHenry St. Closed in January after under 3 years. Partner Jeff Underhill said his development group had decided to re-evaluate the concept. Couvillion later opened in its place.
- Fire Fresh BBQ — 221 S. Fifth St. Closed in July. The restaurant closed for renovations and never reopened. Owners later opened Fire Fresh Southern Kitchen within Goodwood's downtown brewery.
- Gary's on Spring — 204 S. Spring St. Closed in February after 7 years. No reason provided.
- Gospel Bird — 207 E. Main St., New Albany, Indiana. Closed in November after 3 years. Owner Eric Morris said he wanted to focus on his second restaurant, Hull & High Water, and spend more time with his family.
- Highway 31 Diner and Dive — 8610 Dixie Highway. Closed after less than a year. No reason provided.
- Home Run Burgers and Fries — 4600 Shelbyville Road. Closed in November after 9 years. Owner Kathy Scannell said her family decided to downsize and close one of its four restaurant locations.
- JB Cakes — 1101 Goss Ave. Closed after 3 years. No reason provided.
- Le Petit Cafe — 1325 Bardstown Road. Closed in under 6 months. No reason provided.
- Lydia House — 1101 Lydia St. Closed in December after 4 years. Owner Emily Ruff said "the restaurant biz is tough, and I just can't hang anymore."
- Mellow Mushroom — 1023 Bardstown Road. Closed in January after under 3 years. Franchise owners Damon Coates and Jason Mase closed this location to focus on their restaurant in St. Matthews.
- Over the 9 — 120 S. 10th St. Closed in January after 2 years. The restaurant became an event space at the start of 2018.
- Peking City Bistro — 12410 Shelbyville Road. Closed in December after 2 1/2 years. Owner cited family issues.
- Rafferty's — 3601 Springhurst Blvd. Closed in July. No reason provided.
- Red Barn Kitchen — 8131 New La Grange Road. Closed in February after 2 years. Óle Restaurant Group closed its restaurant to help reopen Joe's Older Than Dirt.
- Rocky's Pizza and Panini — 3032 Bardstown Road. Closed in August after more than 5 years. No reason provided.
- Rocky's Sub Pub — 715 W. Riverside Drive, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Closed in April after 42 years. No reason provided.
- South End Zone — 13016 Dixie Highway. Closed after one month. The restaurant suffered physical damage and could not reopen.
- The Ville Taqueria — 3922 Westport Road. Closed after 3 years. No reason provided.
- Zoe's Kitchen — 500 W. Jefferson St. Closed in June after 8 years. No reason provided.
