Chef looking to reopen shuttered 29 Sudbury restaurant - MetroWest Daily News

SUDBURY -- A chef is hoping to launch a triumphant comeback for a popular Hudson Road restaurant.

Flipping a light switch in the old 29 Sudbury, Jordan Mackey stepped into the shuttered restaurant Friday. The bar was empty, the pizza oven sat unused, and a layer of dust was settling on tabletops.

"As you can see, it's a crisis that this space is just sitting here," said Mackey, looking around.

The spot opened in 2013, described as a modern American restaurant influenced by Italian ingredients and flavors. Its doors suddenly shut for a final time over the summer. While a message posted to the website stated it "closed for minor renovations" and will "re-open shortly" under different ownership, 29 Sudbury has remained closed, to the heartbreak of Sudbury residents seeking a place to have dinner with family.

Mackey was the corporate executive chef for Whole House Group, a hospitality firm co-founded by Christ Stephans and Stow resident Greg Hill, who owned 29 Sudbury. With an extensive background in the restaurant industry, he graduated in 2000 from the New England Culinary Institute with an associate’s degree in occupational studies and a bachelor’s degree in hotel and restaurant management.

After hearing about the restaurant's closure, Mackey got to work, negotiating a possible lease with the landlord.

He is currently fundraising to help pay to lease the restaurant. Right now, he said he has more than $100,000 in commitments from investors and members of the local community, with a $700,000 goal.

He's already eyeing changes, such as a new wood grill, more seating on the patio, and developing the basement into a space for cooking classes. Mackey is hoping to keep a Mediterranean feel in the menu, but will "focus on flexible options for people."

"I plan to communicate with the community," said Mackey. "I really want this to be a space for them."
