Champs Diner has been a fixture in Woonsocket since it operated inside a cable car on Park Square in 1926. It has since been transported to its current location and was taken over in 2015 by husband and wife ownership team, Eric and Bethany Marsland.
"(The cable car is) Still a draw. People remember the diner. They come in to the diner,” said Bethany.
But for the Marslands, it's so much more. It's a place for family and friends. It's also a place for Chef Eric to show off his cooking chops honed back in the day in the culinary arts school at RISD.
"It's really been a pleasure. A blessing,” Eric told NBC 10. “Our customers are the reason we get up every day and come here."
Now, Eric will be making omelets and sandwiches by day, and an entirely different fare by night, including his special homemade cakes and pies. The couple will open a restaurant called Fazzini’s on Diamond Hill Road where the old Brick House Restaurant used to be. It will offer fine Italian cuisine and family-style chicken dinners. It will also have a bar with a pub menu and will offer catering.
"I'm looking forward to giving my husband the opportunity to excel at what he does best,” said Bethany.
"It's in East Woonsocket,” added Eric. “There's not a lot of fine dining restaurants in that part of the city and we see that area coming back... and we want to be part of that movement."
The Marslands have been in area restaurants either together or separately for more than 30 years, and in a time where other establishments in our area have been closing their doors, Fazzini's is hiring.
"(Applicants) can contact us at Champs Diner,” explained Bethany. “Please come in, we want to see a face attached to who we're talking to. No email, no texts, just in person."
The new restaurant is looking to open by Valentine's Day if all goes as planned.
