Cortez family expanding restaurant empire beyond Market Square - mySA

Updated

The Cortez family is taking its culinary empire outside the cozy confines of the Market Square area for the first time in more than 75 years of business.

La Familia Cortez Restaurants announced Wednesday that it will open the company’s fifth restaurant in 2019, but this one will be at The Rim, the North Side shopping complex on Interstate 10. The new business is tentatively set to open in the summer in the former site of La Fonda Rim after what the company calls a “substantial reimaging.” La Fonda Rim, which closed in July.

The name of the restaurant will be announced at a later date, but the company already has posted a need to fill 150 job positions.

In and around Market Square, the Cortez family operates La Margarita Restaurant & Oyster Bar, Restaurante Pico de Gallo, Viva Villa Taqueria and, most notably, the always-open Mi Tierra Café y Panadería and attached Mariachi Bar.

According to the announcement, the new restaurant will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner with menus that reflect an all-star lineup of select dishes from the other family restaurants, as well as chef-inspired plates unique to the location.

The Mi Tierra bakery will provide fresh pan dulce and Mexican candy, and the restaurant will have a bar that serves craft cocktails, beer and margaritas.
