1409 Sutter Street gained infamy last year when it became the city’s most expensive Airbnb, asking $10,000 a night. Now it’s open for a considerably less expensive affair: dinner — though a meal at the new restaurant on the property, The 1881 Restaurant at the Mansion on Sutter, is by no means cheap.
Southern California hotelier/restaurateur Bernard Rosenson bought and refurbished the historic Payne Mansion last year. The new restaurant, which is now serving dinner nightly, is named for the year the mansion was built. It’s a unique setting for dinner to say the least. Designer Timothy Quillen decorated the 90-seat dining room, and the space also features a bar and outdoor patio.

John Goulette is the chef at the 1881 Restaurant: His dishes include 28-day aged wagyu ribeye and “Singaporean” Dungeness crab with chili, ginger, peanuts, cilantro and fried mantou. Pierre Dony is the the restaurant’s general manager, Karina Kotovaya (Marlowe, Florio, Michael Mina Group) is bar manager, and pastry chef Allison Gill (Perbacco, Slanted Door) is making desserts like tarte au citron. Nightly hours are 5:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
