The Iron Horse Hotel will close its Smyth restaurant May 1 and in its place will open a new restaurant created by chefs Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite of Dandan, Fauntleroy and EsterEv restaurants.
The new restaurant, still to be named, is expected to open in late June.
Jacobs and Van Rite, who have formed the JVR Group for their restaurants and consulting, will be long-term consultants for the Iron Horse; they won't operate the restaurants themselves.
The chefs will recast all the food and drink menus at the boutique hotel at 500 W. Florida St. That includes the hotel's bar, Branded, and its large patio, the Yard, as well as banquets. New menus are expected to be in place by late May.
The Iron Horse, which opened in 2008, is known for catering to motorcycle riders and holding events such as Thursday Bike Nights. Owned by developer Tim Dixon, the Iron Horse is managed by the Aparium Hotel Group.
Dixon has known Jacobs since Jacobs was a sous chef at Roots, the late restaurant in the building that Dixon owned at 1818 N. Hubbard St. in the Brewers Hill neighborhood.
Dixon indicated in a written statement that he wants American menus for the hotel and "an experiential beverage program."
The food, Jacobs said, will be "very elemental, very simple, very seasonal." He and Van Rite are considering some larger-format dishes for the menu, to be shared family-style.
A hearth is planned for wood-fired cooking, Jacobs said.
In spite of Smyth's closing on May 1, the hotel will serve Mother's Day brunch, Jacobs said, and food still will be served in other areas of the hotel after the closure.
