New Modern Mexican Restaurant Comedor Opens in Downtown Austin - Eater Austin

One of Austin’s biggest restaurants this year, Comedor, the new modern Mexican restaurant from chefs Philip Speer and Gabe Erales, is now open in downtown Austin, on 501 Colorado Street restaurant as of yesterday, Tuesday, April 16.

The restaurant had been open for invitation-only previews this past week. Based on that, the modern Mexican menu is divided up into five sections, spanning from sharable dishes to crudo to entrees to desserts. A popular dish already is the bone marrow tacos, where the rich fat is served on the bone atop gremolata and served alongside tortillas.

Erales joined Comedor from Dai Due Taqueria, where he worked with chef/owner Jesse Griffiths to make hyper-seasonal and local taco fillings like game meats within house-made corn tortillas. Before Austin, Erales had worked at the famed Noma in both its Copenhagen and Mexico locations.

Rounding out the Comedor team is partner William Ball and his team at next-door cocktail bar Garage, which worked on the beverage menu. The stunning space was designed by architect Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig and Drophouse Design.

Ball and Speer worked together before, both on Garage’s food menu as well as the charitable-minded coffee trailer My Name Is Joe Coffee Co. which used to stand where Comedor is currently.

Comedor’s hours are from 5 to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, and then from 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
