KEENE, New Hampshire (KRON) - What the pho?
The owner of a French-Vietnamese restaurant in New Hampshire is meeting with city officials after concerns that the restaurant's name sounds like a profane phrase.
Pho Keene Great, which is not scheduled to open until Mar. 1, had already displayed a small sign featuring its name, which is a play on both Vietnamese dish pho and the name of the town.
If you didn't know, pho is spelled p-h-o but pronounced "fuh."
The restaurant posted a poll on Facebook asking people if the name of the business was offensive, and said it found "97 percent of respondents found the name to be 'fun' rather than offensive."
City Manager Elizabeth Dragon said it’s intended to sound like profanity and that owner Isabelle Jolie didn’t get permission to hang any sign.
Dragon tells New Hampshire Public Radio the city wants Jolie to be successful, but that it has to strike a balance.
Both sides plan to meet soon.
