South Providence restaurant closed after shots fired early Sunday - The Providence Journal

PROVIDENCE — The city licenses board closed a restaurant in South Providence during an emergency meeting Sunday, hours after a gunman fired a shot into its front door.

The gunman, meanwhile, remained at large.

The police said the owner of La Sonrisa, at 320 Broad St., told officers the problem started with a group of people who were arguing inside the restaurant. Security personnel evicted the people but they kept trying to return, and then one of the men pulled out a gun and fired at the restaurant, hitting the door frame, according to a police report.

An officer on patrol heard the blast of a gun at 1:32 a.m., and pulled up in time to see a patron shouting, "He has a gun," and pointing at a man nearby holding something under his hooded sweatshirt, according to a police report.

The police said the man bolted down Portland Street toward Hayward Street, as an officer drove after him, and then he jumped a fence behind a vacant building between Pine and Hayward streets, in the area known as Clown Town. The police chased him there, but lost him.

No one was injured. No detailed description of the gunman was available.
