COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - In this week's Restaurant Report Card, two Greek restaurants in Colorado Springs, one with seven health code violations and another with no violations in years.
Caspian Cafe located on Sinton Road, near I-25 and Garden of the Gods Road had an inspection on January 10, which revealed seven critical violations including:
- The facility being dirty and poorly maintained.
- Employees lacking food safety knowledge.
- Food being held at dangerous temperatures.
This is why Caspian Cafe fails our Restaurant Report Card.
FOX21 reached out to the owner, who immediately got back to us. He didn't want to go on camera but tells us he was away from the restaurant undergoing surgery. He said the head chef happened to be gone too and he's very upset his employees did not keep things up to standard.
Caspian Cafe's owner also said a refrigerator malfunctioned, causing the temperature issue. He assures FOX21 that he spent hours making sure every violation was corrected.
'Hummus' is where the heart is at Jake and Telly's Greek Taverna in Old Colorado City.
"Growing up I used to watch my mom cook and was just enamored by it and loved it and every time she would make something or my dad would make something, I wanted to do it a little differently."
He says he uses some of his grandmother's traditional dishes along with his own spin.
"Our calamari dish is very popular with us. It's not very traditional Greek because we don't fry it which is another reason we like to keep a very healthy menu."
Jake's popular restaurant has been making Mediterranean magic for 21 years.
"You can't risk to get someone sick and if you are not clean yourself, your product won't be clean."
Jake and Telly's hasn't had a single violation in the past 36 months. That's as far back as the health department's database goes.
"If your product is not clean, then you have a chance of making someone sick. I won't allow that. We can't have that happen."
This is why Jake and Telly's Greek Taverna passes our Restaurant Report Card.
Caspian Cafe has been open for 14 years and this inspection seems to be out of character for them.
On June 14, 2018 they were rated excellent by the health department.
