If your perfect evening consists of eating some of New York City’s most delicious food, while enjoying some serious people watching and then collapsing on the most comfortable couch in the world, then you need to immediately head over to the newly opened RH Rooftop Restaurant.
It might seem odd that one of the best meals in the city is being served on top of Restoration Hardware’s 90,000 square foot shopping paradise. RH has opened similar concept restaurants in Chicago, Toronto, West Palm Beach and California, but the New York City outpost is really spectacular.
It is incredibly rare to find a Manhattan restaurant that is spacious, light-filled and surrounded by trees. The sky-lit room is the perfect place to dine on a warm summer evening or a snowy winter night and the adjoining outdoor areas will definitely be super popular when summer finally arrives. The rooftop is basically a landscaped mini-park with some of the best views of downtown Manhattan. London plane trees, jasmine bushes, waterfalls and soaring chandeliers create an opulent and fun atmosphere. And of course, the pillow strewn banquettes are designed to perfection.
But the highlight is really the seasonal menu and curated wine list created by restaurateur Brendan Sodikoff. Most diners seem to like to start dinner with one of my favorites--the burrata plate, which comes with a delicious tomato salad and perfectly grilled garlic bread. The raw vegetable crudité is beautifully presented and artisanal prosciutto arrives with seasonal fruit and a crusty baguette.
Salads are plentiful and the shaved vegetables topped with pecans and a cider vinaigrette is delicious, as is the kale Caesar.
Every single main dish I have tried is outstanding. The RH burger is among the tastiest burgers in town and the accompanying fries with garlic aioli makes a great meal. The salmon with a unique honey and brown butter sauce is perfectly cooked; the 14 oz. charred ribeye is tender and juicy. All entrees are served with a salad or fries—another unusual touch for an upscale city restaurant. Get there early if you want to snag the Dover sole sautéed in brown butter or the heavenly lobster roll—both sold out during a recent dinner.
Dessert is fairly casual, but very indulgent. The chocolate chip cookies are fabulous and ice cream lovers will enjoy the overflowing banana split that comes with small bowls of chocolate chips, coconut, and toffee shavings.
