Romaine lettuce safe to eat again -- E. coli outbreak over, feds say - OregonLive

The E. coli outbreak tied to romaine lettuce grown in California’s Salinas Valley appears to be over after sickening 167 people nationally and one in Oregon.

The warning against eating lettuce from the region has been lifted, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.

The outbreak had forced grocery stores in Oregon to pull certain products from their shelves.

Nobody died in the outbreak, but 85 people in 27 states were hospitalized and 15 had kidney failure, the CDC said. The hardest-hit state was Wisconsin, with 35 total cases, followed by Pennsylvania with 21. California had eight cases and Washington had six.

The outbreak peaked in mid-November, CDC data show. The last case was in late December.

People usually get sick from E. coli three to four days after swallowing the bacteria, according to CDC officials. Symptoms include bloody diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Most people recover within a week, but symptoms can be far more severe, according to the CDC.
