44 more dishes to eat in Alabama before you die - AL.com

Fifteen years ago, the Alabama Tourism Department had the bright idea to put together a bucket list of “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die.”

But it proved to be too much of a challenge to pare it down to only 100.

So, soon after the first “100 Dishes” brochure rolled off the presses, state tourism director Lee Sentell got a call from an Atlanta travel writer.

“He said, ‘This is a great idea, great concept,’” Sentell recalls. “‘I’ve just got one question: I counted them and there’s 235.’”

Sentell didn’t miss a beat.

“I said, ‘So, what’s your point?’”

Since the “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama” list debuted in 2005, the challenge of trying to eat every dish on the list has become an ever-evolving culinary adventure, and since some of the restaurants featured on that original list have closed and new ones have opened, it has been periodically updated over the years.

(A few years ago, the tourism department dropped the “Before You Die” in the name and shortened it to “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama.”)

“We’re excited that this has been a staple for a number of years,” Sentell says. “It’s the longest-running retail promotion that our agency has.”

This year, working with the Birmingham-based Intermark Group marketing agency, the tourism department has refreshed the “100 Dishes” campaign to include a tongue-in-cheek “Food Contest” video that shows what a food-eating contest would be like if it featured dishes from Alabama restaurants and a “100 Dishes Journal” for diners to keep personal notes and ratings on all the dishes as they travel around the state.

“Lee (Sentell) created that ‘100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama’ concept way back in 2005,” Bill Dinan, account director for the Intermark Group, says. “We love the concept. We love the list.

“We were looking for a new way to promote it again that was fresh and new and interesting and hopefully would convince people who have seen it over the last 15 years to take a new look at it.”

In keeping with Sentell’s theory that, when it comes to Alabama food, there’s no such thing as too much of a good thing, the 2020 edition of “100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama” features roughly 250 entries.

But who’s counting, right?

In addition to such perennial favorites as baked grits at Highlands Bar and Grill in Birmingham, fried chicken at Martin’s Restaurant in Montgomery and orange rolls at All Steak Restaurant in Cullman, the new list includes 44 recent additions that have not been featured in previous years.
