Babe's Restaurant — and it's owner, Alphonse "Babe" Bisignano — are iconic and still missed by many in Des Moines. Babe's closed in 1991 and Babe died in 2005.
Before there was Fong's Pizza, there was King Ying Low, which operated for a century before closing in 2008.
Mondo's in West Des Moines and Mustard's in Windsor Heights are gone, too, as are hundreds of other restaurants that once had full dining rooms and busy kitchens.
