The restaurant group behind smash hit Burma Superstar is opening its biggest restaurant yet, Burma Club, tonight. The location is 8 Mint Plaza in the former Oro restaurant space.
“Burma Club draws together 20 years of experience to create our most elegant Burmese Restaurant in San Francisco,” owners write in a short announcement on Instagram.
The multi-level Burma Club is one in a constellation of Burmese restaurants operated by the group: Three Burma Superstars (the first opened in 1992) and Burma Love on Valencia. Hit dishes at each include fermented tea leaf salad, buttery platha flatbread, garlicky noodles, and pork and pumpkin stew.
The former Oro space was originally an old firehouse, and it’s been rearranged somewhat since that last restaurant closed. Oro, from the team behind Commonwealth, shuttered after just 6 months in 2016.
At Burma Club, the bar area has been moved to the rear wall on the Mint Plaza level, and it’s much longer than before. To the right of that bar is a circular “cocktail room,” with curved banquette seating and Burmese artwork. The former Oro bar area is now the main dining room, filled with tables including some communal seating. Then, upstairs, are two large circular booths and another big circular table for large parties.
