Estrada’s Restaurant Closes in Daly City After 102 Years - Eater SF

Serving Daly City for more than a century

Estrada’s Restaurant closed yesterday after 102 years in business. The Daly City Mexican restaurant was perhaps most famous for its sizzling tostada, a salad with beans, chorizo, cheese, black olives, and red wine vinaigrette served on a hot iron plate. While business had started falling off in recent years, the restaurant received some more attention when it was featured on Food Network’s Restaurant Impossible in 2013. But now, the owners of 12 years want to retire and are selling Estrada’s. It will soon reopen as a Mediterranean restaurant from friends of the owners.

A huge honor for Dominque Crenn

Over the weekend, superstar chef Dominique Crenn was honored with the Ordre national du Mérite, one of the greatest awards the French government might give a citizen. From Emmanuel Lebrun-Damiens, consul general of France in San Francisco: “With this award, France recognizes in Dominique Crenn a chef, an artist, and an activist. Her cooking draws inspiration from French cuisine while reinventing classic French food. An experience in her restaurants is an all-embracing art work, as in music or architecture. And through here gastronomy, she gets involved with the city and the world, in a willingness to address the challenges facing our time.“

A taste of Veracruz

Traci Des Jardins’s Arguello, located inside the historic Presidio Officers’ Club, is debuting a new monthly menu series highlighting classic dishes and cooking techniques from different regions of Mexico. For the first month of Taste of Mexico, chef de cuisine Jose Alvarez will explore the cuisine of Veracruz, characterized by Afro-Caribbean and Spanish influences. Four specials are available a la carte along with two cocktails. See the menu below.

Ayesha Curry’s first retail store is now open

Ayesha Curry’s pop-up Homemade opened over the weekend in Oakland’s Jack London Square, selling home products such as her eponymous line of cookware, bakeware, and kitchen textiles. Located at 423 Water Street, it’s open Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

$10 cocktails every week

MKT Bar’s The Den has functioned as a monthly cocktail party pop-up with live music and occasional guest bartenders. Now, it’s expanding to weekly, every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. This week, it’ll feature bartenders Jacopo Rosito and Valentino Longo from Champagne Bar at Le Sirenuse in Italy.
