According to The Telegraph, one woman is dead after eating at RiFF, a Michelin-starred restaurant in Valencia, Spain, on Saturday. At least 23 other people who were at the restaurant recently have reported sickness after eating there.

María Jesús Fernández Calvo, 46, died on Sunday morning after "bouts of vomiting and diarrhea," the newspaper reports. She was reportedly at RiFF with her husband and their young son celebrating her husband's birthday. Her two family members are among those who claimed they fell ill, though they reportedly suffered from much milder bouts of the sickness and have since recovered.

Calvo ordered a rice and morchella fungi dish off the menu, prompting immediate reports she'd been fed poisonous mushrooms, though that's not been confirmed.

Spanish newspaper El Pais reports the restaurant will remain closed until health officials are able to confirm Calvo's official cause of death. Regional health chief Ana Barceló cautioned people from jumping to conclusions and said a primary examination of the restaurant was "normal.” She added:

Analytical tests will now be carried out on the food products...We will have to wait for the autopsy to be carried out on the woman before we can determine whether it was the ingestion of a food that directly caused her death, or whether it prompted a state that led to this fatal outcome, or if she had an existing condition."

The chef and owner of RiFF Bernd H. Knöller issued a statement following the death conveying his "deep regret" for what happened and confirming he was collaborating with the health department "for the clarification of the facts, hoping that as soon as possible the causes of what happened can be established."
