Five years after opening in an emerging corridor of downtown Greenville, another restaurant has closed.
American Burger Co., which opened at 301 East McBee Ave. in 2013, has closed its doors permanently, officials with the brand's parent company, Chanticleer Holdings, confirmed late Monday afternoon.
The decision to close was "economic," said Jason Assad, who handles corporate communications for Chanticleer Holdings. Assad was careful to note that Chanticleer Holdings, which owns five brands, including American Burger Co., was still very interested in Greenville as a home for one of the company's other concepts.
Chanticleer Holdings CEO Mike Pruitt echoed those sentiments, specifically mentioning potential for the Little Big Burger brand, a focused high-quality burger concept with roots in Portland, Oregon.
"We’re committed to the area, this was just a business decision based on somebody wanting the spot," Pruitt said. "It made economic sense to us to sell it and evaluate what we do next in terms of Greenville."
Pruitt and Assad confirmed that the building and equipment had been purchased by a buyer with Greenville restaurant roots, who has plans to turn the space into a new restaurant. Both declined to say what that restaurant would be, but said it would not be focused on burgers.
Chanticleer Holdings acquired the American Burger Co. brand in 2013, shortly after the concept opened in Greenville. The company, which is headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, has upwards of 60 other restaurants.
