A new Israeli restaurant is opening in downtown Austin food hall Fareground from Hummus Among Us owner and chef Berty Richter, taking over Easy Tiger’s soon-to-be vacated slot. TLV is opening on 111 Congress Avenue starting on Thursday, March 7, which happens to be the day before South by Southwest begins.
The name stems from the three-letter code for the Tel Aviv airport in Israel. The menu will involve those hummus platters (with options marinated chickpeas, eggs, fried eggplant, and more — notably, the food truck’s brisket won’t be available at the restaurant), sandwiches filled with falafel and sabich (fried eggplant and hard-boiled eggs), salads, bourekas (hand pies), pita, sufganiyot (doughnuts), and tahini, as well as coffee.
Involved in TLV is Kevin Fink, the owner/chef of Emmer & Rye and fellow Fareground neighbor Henbit. The stall isn’t going to sell pastries and bread from Easy Tiger, as previously noted.
Easy announced earlier today that it was shuttering its Fareground stall to focus on its full-scale restaurants/beer gardens. Its last day will be on Friday, February 22. Cheese shop Antonelli’s also closed at the end of last year, replaced by Italian restaurant Italic, both of which are run by the ELM Restaurant Group.
Richter opened the hummus truck in October 2017 after raising money through Kickstarter. He has cooked in Israel, Spain, and New York and came to Austin to open the food truck. He shuttered the truck at the end of last year, presumably to prepare for the new restaurant.
Similarly, across downtown on West 2nd Street, McGuire Moorman Hospitality is opening a Mediterranean-inspired grill restaurant as part of the upcoming luxury hotel and condo Austin Proper, set for June.
