Another sign it’s winter in New York City—besides the chilly gray days—NYC & Company, the city’s destination marketing organization, announced today that reservations are open for NYC Restaurant Week. This year, the winter edition of the city's semi-annual celebration will take place between January 21 and February 8, 2019.

NYC Restaurant Week enables food lovers to take advantage of prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus available at nearly 400 eateries throughout the city. This year, two-course lunches are priced at $26 and three-course dinners at $42. Most menus offer a minimum of three choices of appetizers and entrees at lunch and dinner, and two choices of dessert at dinner.

A win-win situation for restaurateurs and their patrons, NYC Restaurant Week, now in its 27th year, allows Big Apple residents and visitors to snag deals at some of their favorite eateries, and to try new ones when the pace of business is slow and many seats typically go unfilled. The “weeks” take place each summer and winter.

What you need to know

  • The official NYC Restaurant Week website lists all participating restaurants and offers links to make reservations. The site is searchable by restaurant name, type of cuisine, meal (lunch or dinner) and location.
  • Book your seats as soon as possible; reservations for popular eateries tend to fill up quickly. Sometimes, it’s easier to book lunch (rather than dinner) reservations.
  • Although called “Restaurant Week,” most such weeks (in NYC and elsewhere) extend longer than that. For example, NYC Restaurant Week 2019 runs a full 17 days.
  • Before you book, research restaurant reviews in newspapers, online publications and on review sites (like OpenTable, TripAdvisor, Yelp, Chowhound, Zagat, etc.)
  • Always read the fine print because special menus may be limited to certain hours and/or days of the week (e.g., Saturday nights may be excluded.)
  • Be sure to glance at the special Restaurant Week menus (also on the official NYC Restaurant Week website). These menus are usually more limited than regular ones and may not include your favorite dishes.
  • Beverages, tax and gratuities are NOT generally included although some restaurants offer special Restaurant Week specialty cocktails or wine pairings.
  • Given the discount pricing, use this opportunity to break out of your comfort zone by trying out new foods, new dishes and new places.
  • Get social. Invite friends and family to join you.
  • Remember to be gracious in tipping your server who may be overstretched during these busy weeks.

“NYC Restaurant Week Winter 2019 epitomizes the quality, variety and hospitality that makes New York City one of the restaurant capitals of the world,” said Tracy Nieporent, partner and director of marketing for Myriad Restaurant Group and chairman of NYC & Company’s Restaurant Committee. “We look forward to welcoming our guests with warm greetings as they enjoy over 33 hearty international cuisines in 41 neighborhoods this winter.”

Although NYC Restaurant Week is one of the most ambitious in the nation, the week isn’t a New York happening alone. Check out the website FindRestaurantWeeks that catalogs information about restaurant weeks in other cities/states across the U.S. You can also Google the terms “name of your city/travel destination” and “restaurant week” to discover others.
