MILWAUKEE -- The city's health department has temporarily closed iconic downtown German restaurant Mader's due to an "imminent health hazard."
A source with the Milwaukee Health Department says a rodent infestation is the source of the issue.
“The establishment has been closed due to an imminent health hazard. Operations will resume once corrections have been made and compliance is confirmed by the Health Department," a statement from Health Communications Officer Dr. Diamond Hanson reads.
The health department says a report on the closure will be available Friday morning.
Victor Mader sent the following statement to TODAY'S TMJ4, saying "we take this matter seriously."
"Mader’s Restaurant has temporarily closed for Thursday evening so that we can address an issue brought to our attention by City Health Department officials," Mader said. "We take this matter seriously and are implementing the appropriate steps needed to properly and fully address the matter so that we can reopen tomorrow. Mader’s is committed to providing its guests with a clean and safe eating environment. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused our guests, and we look forward to welcoming them tomorrow after this matter has been fully resolved."
According to health department records, Mader's was one inspection away from being shut down in 2018 for failing to fix a walk-in cooler.
In 2018, Mader's was also cited for putting ready-to-eat pretzels under raw schnitzel, failing to keep lettuce and spinach at cold enough temperatures, having a mix and sauce that exceed their freshness date and dust and dirt debris in the kitchen area. The restaurant corrected all of those issues, according to the health department.
