The Buzz: Maple Tree Restaurant opens - Appleton Post Crescent

Maple Tree Restaurant & Pancake House opened Wednesday in a familiar spot.

It’s the new breakfast/lunch family restaurant that leased the former Mary’s Family Restaurant, the yellow building at 2106 S. Oneida St. in Appleton, a block south of the Calumet Street intersection.

Faces inside the new Maple Tree Restaurant might also be familiar, as owners Agron and Spresa Bekteshi come from restaurant families. Her brothers own Apple Valley Pancake House and Galvan’s in Appleton, and she and Agron have both worked in those restaurants. Agron was also previously a partner in the Twin City Diner in Neenah.

Family members pitched in to help them open.

“It’s like a family tree,” said Agron, referring to their expanding family owned eateries. He could also be referring to the new restaurant's apt name, as it grew from the others.

Their families are Albanians who moved from Macedonia. She’s been here since the age of five. He moved to the states in 2001.

Agron says they’re renting the restaurant building with the intention to eventually buy it.

“I hope to be here until I retire,” he said. “I’ll try to do the best I can to make good food and keep it clean.”

Spresa said they’re happy this week started with just a trickle of customers. In this start-up phase, the staff is learning a complex new ordering system.

“We’re hoping for a slower start so employees can get the hang of it," she said. "We want people coming in to have good service.”

Early customers found the place by chance.

Jacque Jeskey and Chris Freimuth, owners of Replay Toys in Appleton, drove down Oneida Street Thursday morning to get a bite to eat before work.

“We just noticed it as we were driving by. We made a U-turn,” said Jeskey. “Everything was delicious.”

Hours: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. every day. Breakfast and lunch menus are available at all times, and the large menu includes items like build-your-own breakfast skillets and broasted chicken. Prices are mostly $5 to $12. A $6.99 all-you-can-eat soup, salad and breadstick lunch and other daily specials are listed on a sign inside the door.

Note that Mary’s Family Restaurant is still operating in its original location on Richmond Street on Appleton’s north side. It closed this south side location last May.
