Where is the restaurant scene headed on Staten Island? - SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Late last year, when the number of eateries on Staten Island registered at 993, it was clear that new places with casual concepts far outnumbered linen-cloth, fine dining formats. But what else can we learn about the restaurant industry in the borough, and where it is headed based on data from the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)?

A spokeswoman for the DOHMH reported, “Approximately 129 Staten Island restaurants went out of business in 2019, compared to 123 in 2018.”

And separately, if it can be broken out: How many restaurants were shut down by the Health Dept. on Staten Island over the course of the year? Is that latter number down?

“In 2019, 20 restaurants were closed by the Health Department, compared to 36 closures in 2018,” she noted.

And what are new food guidelines to expect in 2020?

One of the biggest pieces of legislation to impact restaurants this year is a new local law that will take effect in April, and will limit the beverage options a restaurant can offer on a children’s menu, limiting the amount of sugar.

According to the DOHMH, violations of the law cannot exceed $200 and infractions do not knock against the overall health grade of "A", "B" and “C.”

The DOHMH defines children’s menus as those that appeal to young ones with toys, illustrations, language or games -- and if there are maximum ages set by the restaurant for the meal.

As the law notes, eateries must list beverages with serving sizes when part of the meal.

Some items that get the OK on kiddie meals are water and sparkling water or flavored water, with no added natural or artificial sweeteners. Non-fat or 1% dairy milk or its non-dairy equivalent and 100 percent veggie or fruit juice with water or sparkling water are permitted. The juices may not have any artificial or natural sweeteners.
