The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert due to illnesses caused by the bacterium, Listeria monocytogenes, associated with FDA-regulated hard-boiled eggs that have been recalled by Georgia-based Almark Foods.
FSIS said the public health alert on 3.6-ounce, single meal package of ready-to-eat bacon and eggs from Cheesewich with certain best “use by” dates was being issued “out of an abundance of caution to ensure that consumers are aware that these products should not be consumed.”
There have been no confirmed reports of illness due to consumption of the FSIS-regulated products produced containing these eggs, according to the alert.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, public health and regulatory officials in several states and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes infections linked to hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark.
Seven people infected with the outbreak strain of the bacterium have been reported from five states as of Dec. 17. Four hospitalizations have been reported. One death has been reported from Texas.
Epidemiologic and laboratory evidence indicates that bulk hard-boiled eggs from Almark are a likely source of this outbreak, according to the CDC.
Almark has recalled all hard-boiled eggs produced at its Gainesville facility - resulting in dozens of recalled or associated recalled products - and temporarily stopped production there.
The Cheesewich product with ingredients containing recalled eggs have use by dates of Dec. 27, 2019; Jan. 3, 2020; Jan. 23, 2020; Jan. 30, 2020; Feb. 5, 2020; Feb. 6, 2020; Feb. 14, 2020; Feb. 19, 2020 and Feb. 28, 2020.
They also bear one of the following lot codes: 281191, 302191, 309191, 316191, 336191,323191, 331191, 336191, 344191.
The product contains two each of separately packaged turkey bacon and hard-boiled eggs. Packages bear establishment number “P-45031” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
In its alert, FSIS, which regulates such products made with meat, said consumers that have purchased these products are urged not to consume them and that the products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Less commonly, persons outside these risk groups are affected.
