An Italian restaurant with locations in Kingston and Red Hook is looking to open in Poughkeepsie.
Savona's Trattoria, a traditional Italian restaurant boasting a family-friendly atmosphere, aims to open mid-January, according to owner Stephen Savona.
"We're taking that casual, family atmosphere and bringing the philosophy behind it to our Poughkeepsie location," he said.
The restaurant will open at 1 Collegeview Ave., the former location of BC Kitchen and Bar, otherwise known as Babycakes. The business closed in 2018.
Savona said the restaurant has received all its permits, as well as its liquor license. Once construction is complete, he hopes to receive a certificate of occupancy.
Savona considered the idea of trying a new concept for the restaurant, but he felt the traditional, family-centric theme was one that would transfer well to Poughkeepsie.
That isn't to say the restaurant is an exact replica; the new location will feature an industrial look contrasting the other restaurants' more rustic decor.
"We're doing a concrete bar, and the restaurant will feature a lot of grays and slate blues," Savona said.
Yet guests can expect a traditional Italian menu, featuring pasta, wood-fired pizza, salads and more.
Both locations feature a lunch and dinner menu, as well as brunch specials. Savona's also serves wine, beer and cocktails.
Savona acknowledged the neighborhood features other restaurants serving similar cuisine, but he felt the trattoria could distinguish itself on its atmosphere.
"There are a lot of great restaurants in the area, but we do things differently enough that I didn't think we needed to change our concept," he said.
The Poughkeepsie restaurant will seat about 65 people and employ about 25, with some staff transferring from the existing restaurants. Savona's is hiring, and applications can be submitted online at savonas.com/were-hiring.
