Pelham restaurant owned by Eli Gold closing - AL.com

Nino’s Italian Restaurant in Pelham, begun as a venture by Alabama Crimson Tide radio voice Eli Gold, is closing at the end of this month.

In a Facebook post,, the eatery announced it would be closing after the death of Gold’s business partner Walter Caron, and his wife Chris. Walter died in February, while Deborah Kaye “Chris” Caron died in July. The two were called the restaurant’s “backbone."

The announcement began, “Sometimes in life things happen over which we have absolutely no control.”

“Even though our food is still up to the standards that would make them both proud, the atmosphere is just not the same,” the post said. “Walter was an attraction. An original. There was only one Walter, and when we lost him, we lost the heartbeat of our restaurant.”

Caron and Gold, two transplanted New Yorkers, opened the eatery in an old Shoney’s location in 2009. Caron joked in a 2009 Birmingham News piece that he didn’t want Gold in the kitchen, but in the broadcast booth.

In closing, the restaurant’s announcement thanked customers for their support.

“It was a hard decision to make, but sadly, it is the correct decision,” it said.
