For 19 years Piatto served Italian food from West Pomfret Street in Carlisle.
When it closed in August 2018, the restaurant left a void. By early next year, it will be replaced with Sage Café, a lunch café serving late breakfasts and lunch. The restaurant also will provide catering.
“We think it’s a cool area. People are friendly, there are college students, a historic district. We really liked the atmosphere and we feel there is a lot of potential there,” said Taryn Farhat, co-owner with her husband, Ameer Farhat.
The couple, who purchased the two-story building used to operate Pizza Delights in Harrisburg and Elizabethville. Ameer had been involved with the pizza restaurants since 1998 but retired to focus on their other business, A to Z Construction in Halifax.
“This one will be mine basically and he’s helping with construction,” Taryn said.
The company will renovate the restaurant. They plan to build an addition to the Civil War-era brick building and expand the kitchen and add new restrooms. The second floor will house two private conference rooms for groups.
Once the cafe opens, Taryn said the menu will focus on brick-oven pizzas, sandwiches, soups and baked goods. Tayrn said she is an avid baker and will be selling items such as cupcakes, cookies, whoopie pies and scones.
The cafe will operate 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday- Friday.
