New York City Demands More Transparency From Grubhub Following Restaurant Backlash - Eater NY

Critic finds “unfailingly juicy” chicken doused in peri peri heat in Bed-Stuy

Hungry City writer Mahira Rivers is delighted with her meal at Peri Peri Grill House in Bed-Stuy, which specializes in grilled meats doused in peri peri chile. The owner Sohaib Malik is Pakistani, and his wife Ruschke is from South Africa and introduced him to peri peri by way of popular Johannesburg-based chain Nando’s. After wanting the style to be in New York, Malik opened Peri Peri Grill House just last year but seems to be a hit with the neighborhood, with waits stretching to 30 minutes most nights. That’s probably because it serves “unfailingly juicy” chicken and “buttery, tender” lamb chops, she writes. Of the chicken wings, she notes, “Chicken wings, for example, are flame-grilled, with the blackened bits to prove it, and slicked with peri peri sauce that hums with citrus and spice. But the smoke is what sticks with you.

City cracks down on food delivery services

New York City restaurateurs struggling with high fees imposed by food delivery platforms now have the city on their side: On Thursday, City Council grilled Grubhub and Uber Eats over their alleged hidden fees — specifically asking about bogus phone call orders that local restauranteurs have brought to light. Many in attendance, including owners of 5 Napkin Burger, Tribeca’s Kitchen, and Enoteca On Court, pointed out that it’s nearly impossible to live without delivery services in this day and age, but at times, it becomes financially unviable to sustain those partnerships. Restaurateurs, as well as councilman Mark Gjonaj, a small business champion who chairs the committee that ran the meeting, called for more transparency over the fee structures of Grubhub and Uber Eats. Gjonaj called on Grubhub to go through all of its call transcripts and refund each and every restaurant who was wrongly charged for non-orders. Meanwhile, Grubhub execs claim the restaurateurs pushing back against these fees are a small fraction of their NYC clients, who are overall content with the service.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez are out on the town again

Page Six has again tracked down the whereabouts of Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez, who were most recently seen dining at high-end Japanese restaurant O Ya in Kips Day on Thursday. The couple had a candlelit dinner of sushi and cocktails. In May, they were spotted dining at Emily in the West Village, and Sanchez has also been spotted dining at Nello and Sette Mezzo on the Upper East Side.

Chengdu hot pot import gets a positive review

Chengdu hot pot import Da Long Yi goes beyond the two-flavor pot and offers three instead: a mushroom-based broth, a tomato-based one, and a “volcanic” red pot, Jiayang Fan writes in the New Yorker. One should go bold with the meat pairings at the Chinatown restaurant, Fan writes. “Begin with the pig artery, which is served in pearly-white, curling slices that absorb a nice amount of whatever soup you choose without being held hostage to the oils and spices,” she says, also praising the pork kidney, pig brain, and beef tendons.

East Village loses a 20-year-old bar

East Village dive bar Manitoba’s is now closed, following a 20-year run in the neighborhood. The bar located at 99 Avenue B, between Sixth and Seventh streets, shut its doors on Tuesday; the reason for the closure was not immediately clear. Owner Richard “Handsome Dick” Manitoba, a punk rock singer and radio personality, plans on keeping the website live, where a ton of old-school rock and roll and bar photos are displayed.
