4 Hidden Restaurants Around The World You Need To Find To Enjoy - Forbes

Whether you have to go through a secret doorway, take a separate elevator or follow an unusual path, there’s something exciting about visiting a “hidden” restaurant. You’ll be seated feeling happy that you found your destination and ready to eat something delicious. Here are four restaurants around the world where locating the establishment is half the fun.

1. Frevo

If you want to surprise a date or family member visiting New York City, this restaurant truly has that wow factor — that’s because you’ll sneakily have to go behind a painting in an art gallery to visit this boîte. Located on 48 W 48thStreet you’ll step into a gallery filled with the works of French painter Toma-L and once you locate the largest painting in there, you’ll know this is also the door to Frevo, an 18-seat counter restaurant. Once seated, you can enjoy a five-course dinner which serves dishes like crab, curry, and broccoli as a starter or chicken, gnocchi, and mushroom as a main. The kitchen operates under the watchful eye of Brazilian Chef Franco Sampogna and the restaurant reaches out to you beforehand to ask for any dietary restrictions. So, once you arrive at the gallery all you need to do is pick the right painting to let you into this one of a kind restaurant.

2. Ultraviolet (Pictured Above)

This Shanghai restaurant has the trifecta of hidden fine dining — it’s unmarked, extremely exclusive and an unforgettable culinary experience. Since 2012 Chef Paul Pairet has impressed diners with his avant garde take on fine dining which involves everything from lighting and scents to video and audio production. This experience plays out alongside inventive dishes and drinks served to only ten guests per night. Don’t expect to just walk into this restaurant — its location is so top secret that you’ll be brought there by minivan. A lift will take you to your dining room where you’ll be immersed in a culinary spectacle guaranteed to entertain your mind and tantalize your palate.

3. Cookies

I recommend allocating at least five minutes to finding Berlin’s Cookies restaurant because there’s a chance you can’t locate it immediately — I know I wasn’t able to. The website handily lets you that “when you think you’re lost – you’re right.” Once you enter, you’ll walk through a cavernous space until you get to the playful dining room where all the action happens. Cookies is a vegetarian restaurant but meat lovers, don’t worry, you won’t even miss anything because this plant-based restaurant will satiate any and all cravings. I fondly remember the Parmesan dumplings served with with Perigord truffle stock pine, chives and spinach. It was an umami bite that I can’t wait to have the next I go to Berlin. Added bonus, this time I know exactly where to go!

4. Sushi By Bou Suite 1001

Why eat sushi in a restaurant when you can have it in a hotel suite? Sushi By Bou Suite 1001 is a sushi speakeasy which can only accessed behind a hidden door in the Hotel 3232. You’ll arrive in the lobby where you’ll be presented with a key to the 10th floor. There you’ll partake in a 17-piece omakase dining experience for $100. Aside from delicious sushi you’ll also enjoy the ambiance and décor of this decked-out suite which comes with chic wallpapered walls and sumptuous leather seating areas. This intimate sushi experience is a great date spot and you won’t forget about your stay at Suite 1001 so quickly.
