Somerville’s Indian dining landscape has been changing over the past few months, with a closure, an opening, and another new spot on the way.
First up, Royal Bengal (364 Medford St.) in Winter Hill has closed down. The restaurant, which moved to its Somerville location from Cambridge in 2014 and later expanded into an adjacent space, had served a menu of Bengali dishes, including shorshe maach (fish with ground mustard sauce), kasha mangsho (spicy goat meat with rice), murgir jhol (chicken stew), and shrimp in coconut milk gravy. Royal Bengal also served curries, biryani, and tandoori specials. No word yet on what may take its place.
Meanwhile, Curry Express (147 B Highland Ave.) has opened on Spring Hill, moving into the longtime Pizza King space. The new restaurant serves a broad menu featuring Indian dishes like chat, tandoori specials, and biryani, along with soups, salads, halal burritos and roll-ups, and assorted momo, plus chicken wings and masala-marinated tenders.
Finally, Godavari Mini (23 Union Sq.) closed very shortly after opening in the spring in the heart of Union Square, but a replacement is now on the way: Masala Square could open soon. The new restaurant promises to serve a mix of Indian and Nepali dishes, including lunch specials of appetizers, curry, and sides. It may also put on events, including cooking classes with the chef.
