New restaurant opens in place of Martin County community staple - WYMT News

MARTIN COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The doors are open and the food is hot.

"People feel like we're serving the same purpose, the same food," said Brenda Davis.

Verlia's Kitchen is open. Now in the same building as an old Martin County community staple.

"We are using a lot of things they had, their recipes," David pointed out.

Walker's Restaurant opened in 1979 but closed in 2007.

"We still do the Walker Burger and that's a big seller. People love that," said Davis.

She told WYMT the new eatery got its name from her mother.

"My mother loved the kitchen. She loved to cook. Plus, she worked at the Warfield Dairy Bar for 32 years," Davis recalled.

Although it has a new name, the family-owned business still hosts the same home-town atmosphere.

"We're trying to bring it back. You know we've got our fire department coming back now so hopefully, things will you know, look up," said Dennis Moore.

Moore said there is one huge driving factor in opening this restaurant.

"We tried to put heart in it to make it good for the community," Moore pointed out.

The kitchen can make some sweet treats. "If ya'll want the best ice cream in town, come down to Verlia's Kitchen," said 11-year-old Trey McCoy.

Plus, you will also find the hot-foods many enjoyed for years.

"My favorite food is the sub sandwiches," said David. "We still do the Walker Burger and that's a big seller. People love that."

One thing you will find is hope embedded in the walls.

"It gives other people hope that you can open a business in Martin County," Davis pointed out.

Owners are looking forward to the future while preserving the past.

If you would like to visit the restaurant, here is the address:
