The most recent owner of Wing’s Chinese — which, until February, was San Jose’s oldest full-service restaurant — is back in business in San Jose.
Ashley Yu has opened a Wing’s of San Jose catering operation, with pickup and delivery service, in a commercial kitchen on the appropriately named Commercial Street, north of the original Japantown location of the restaurant.
And she has hopes of welcoming her longtime customers to a brick-and-mortar location in the future.
“We are still looking for a new retail space for Wing’s,” she said.
Meantime, the restaurateur is accepting catering, takeout and delivery orders for Mandarin and Szechuan dishes from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. via phone (408-294-3303) and email (wingsofsanjose@gmail.com).
The historic Wing’s, located in the city’s Japantown, was owned by just a handful of families over the years. According to Mercury News archives, Wing’s opened in 1925 and was run for 25 years by Wing Chen. Then the Wing’s baton passed to Henry Wong, who sold it in 1976 to brothers Louis and David Wang. They operated the restaurant for decades and, then Yu and family took over.
After 94 years, the restaurant closed in February. “It’s a great location,” building owner Louis Wang said, “but the building is very old.”
Estimates for bringing the 1925 building up to current standards range from $140,000 for ADA work to $500,000 to $600,000 for a full remodeling, he estimated at the time.
In August, the historic neon sign — with flapping wings — that dated to the 1940s was removed from the Jackson Street building and taken to History San Jose for safekeeping.Details: www.wingsofsanjose.com
