New Restaurant Opens In Downtown Fairfield - Fairfield, CT Patch

FAIRFIELD, CT — Downtown Fairfield has a new dining option after Korean sports bar Bonchon opened earlier this month.

The restaurant at 1565 Post Road had a soft opening Oct. 1, followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday.

Bonchon ownership's choice to locate the business in Fairfield shows the strength of the town's restaurant scene, said Community and Economic Development Director Mark Barnhart.

"We're just thrilled to have them be a part of it," he said.

Founded in South Korea in 2002, Bonchon has 95 franchise locations in the U.S. — including four in Connecticut — and more than 300 restaurants worldwide, according to the business.

Bonchon serves Korean fried chicken, as well as traditional Korean and Asian-fusion food, in a contemporary sports bar setting, according to Fairfield franchise owner Leo Chung, of Stamford. The business's original soy garlic sauce is used on the fried chicken and as a marinade.

The restaurant has a full bar, including eight draft beers, most of which are local to Connecticut, said Chung, who co-owns Bonchon with Tony and Eileen Zhou, of Norwalk.

The trio also owns the Bonchon location in New Haven. Tony and Eileen have a background in restaurant ownership, including Tengda Asian Bistro in Greenwich, while Chung is classically trained in the culinary arts.

Chung said they wanted to open Bonchon in Fairfield because it's a beach town with several universities nearby, and they found a location with lots of foot traffic.

"It's a very up-and-coming hip town," Chung said.

Bonchon's storefront was previously home to Chef's Table, which moved two years ago. For the majority of the past year, Chung, Tony and Eileen have worked to create a space that would meet their needs, with large windows and a garage-style door.

The restaurant includes four tables that each seat eight to 10 people, and the owners hope Bonchon will become a place where local teams gather after games. The restaurant will have a patio in the summer. The owners are also considering hosting special events and expanding Bonchon's hours past the current closing times of 10 p.m. weekdays and 11 p.m. weekends.
