Oldies but goodies: Six restaurants that have participated in 26 Hudson Valley Restaurant Weeks - The Journal News / Lohud.com

It's been 13 years since Hudson Valley Restaurant Week (HVRW) began as a way to support the local economy and showcase the culinary talent and abundance of seasonal goods in the Hudson Valley.

The promotion, held twice a year (fall and spring), runs this year from Nov. 5 to 17 and includes three-course $22.95 prix-fixe lunch and $32.95 dinner menus. And while the places showcased have ebbed and flowed over the seasons — and there's a new owner for Valley Table Magazine which puts on the event — one thing has remained constant: Six restaurants.

Seventy restaurants participated in that start-up year; there are more than 200 participating this year (including 20 newcomers) spanning Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Ulster, Orange, Sullivan and Dutchess counties. However, those half dozen stalwarts stand out for their longtime commitment.

Mike Martinelli, group publisher for Today Media, the new owner of Valley Table Magazine, said he's happy these original restaurants continue to be in the HRVW mix.

"Any restaurant choosing to invest in Hudson Valley Restaurant Week for a second time and especially a twenty-sixth time, shows the value these businesses receive in participating. They witness the increase in diners and revenue, they see first-timers walk in the door, and they are earning lifetime customers by providing an enjoyable and memorable experience.

"Beyond the new patrons and incremental revenue, these restaurants are also collectively championing our region as a special dining destination, one that deserves to be recognized and celebrated."

In celebration of the 13th year of Hudson Valley Restaurant Week, here is a look at 6 original participants:

Cosimo's Trattoria, Poughkeepsie: This Italian restaurant has been doing farm-to-table dining since it opened over 35 years ago and strongly emphasizes bringing folks together over good quality ingredients. Diners can expect everything from handcrafted mozzarella to wood-fired pizzas to traditional family recipes such as Eggplant Siciliano and Seafood Fra Diavolo. Go: 120 Delafield St., Poughkeepsie, 845-485-7172, cosimospoughkeepsie.com

Crabtree's Kittle House Restaurant & Inn, Chappaqua: A commitment to hospitality and fine dining defines this historic restaurant known for its dedication to seasonal fare as well as to the wine that goes with it (there are more than 5,000 bottles to choose from). Owner John Crabtree, who's run the business for 38 years, credits family sensibility to its success, along with excellent food. That means taking care of diners as well as treating staff like family. Go: 11 Kittle Road, Chappaqua, 914-666-8044, crabtreeskittlehouse.com

Harvest on Hudson, Hastings-on-Hudson: In business for 21 years, Harvest on the Hudson features one of the most spectacular settings, complete with a soaring ceiling and stone fireplace reminiscent of a Tuscan lodge. There's also a large outdoor garden featuring herbs and vegetables used in various forms on the menu. Diners can expect inventive Mediterranean cuisine, a sizable bar and lounge, and, on the right night, memorable sunset views over the Palisades.

As for why the longtime commitment to HVRW, owner Angelo Liberatore cited the excitement the promotion brings. "Hudson Valley Restaurant Week allows us to showcase our wonderful restaurant to a new clientele at an approachable price point," he said. "Additionally it stimulates business and generates traffic in an otherwise slower period. It's a win-win for everybody." Go: 1 River St., Hastings-on-Hudson, 914-478-2800, harvesthudson.com

Sonora, Port Chester: A fusion of Latin flavors, a festive beverage program and the gregarious personality of chef/owner Rafael Palomino define this Latin restaurant. In business 20 years (its official anniversary was in May), diners can expect a culinary taste tour through Latin America, Mexico, and Spain, as well as influences from Palomino's childhood in Bogotá, Colombia. Among some of the tapas: crispy coconut shrimp from Peru served with sweet plantain and Chino Latino lemongrass sauce, Mexican tacos de churrasco with grilled skirt steak, mushrooms, chopped lettuce, and cilantro sauce and quinoa empanadas from Peru, filled with roasted eggplant, quinoa, and goat cheese, served with chocolate vinaigrette. Diners will also find an avocado margarita, a Brazilian Cosmo and a Cucumber Mango Martini. Go: 179 Rectory St., Port Chester, 914-933-0200, sonorarestaurant.net

Terrapin Restaurant, Rhinebeck: Expect to be treated to a fusion of New American and world cuisine at this eye-catching farm-to-table bistro (it's housed in a former 200-year-old church). On the HVRW menu: A quarter pound Hudson Valley Cattle company burger, barbecued duck quesadilla with mango-avocado salsa, and Uncle Vinny's special rigatoni. Go: 6426 Montgomery St., Rhinebeck, 845-876-3330, terrapinrestaurant.com

X2O Xaviars on the Hudson, Yonkers: A strong believer in fine dining, farm-to-table food and good wine, Chef Peter X. Kelly was one of the visionaries behind HVRW and a strong supporter of its mission from day one. X2O Xaviars on The Hudson in Yonkers, which he opened in 2007 after running restaurants in Rockland and Putnam, is literally perched on the river and features a dining salon with views of the water from practically every seat. There's also a casual lounge with a sushi bar so guests never have to feel eating at X2O necessarily means “a big dining experience.” Long story short: Guests will feel special no matter where they eat or how much they spend.

Among the items on this year's HVRW list: Locally raised chicken, Hudson Valley foie gras and beef cheek ravioli, beer braised short ribs of beef and pan-roasted Chatham cod. Go: 71 Water Grant St., Yonkers, 914-965-1111, xaviars.com
